Applying negotiation strategies to address potential workplace conflicts
Negotiation is one of the conflict management strategies and it is defined as a process through which decisions are made among the parties that are interdependent but do not share any identical preferences. Negotiation is initiated in order to try to bring a satisfactory exchange between these parties engaged in conflict. In using negotiation to manage workplace conflict, it is important that the negotiation is geared towards making the outcome a win-win situation. this ensures that all parties in the conflict have to compromise certain aspects and win others in order to resolve the conflict Barki & Jon, 2001.
This way of balancing compromise with accommodation ensures that the parties play an active role in the resolution of the conflict. The parties have to seek cooperation with each other in order to keep in consideration the interests and needs of the other parties in a selfless and submissive way whereby the person relinquishes some of their interests for the other party. In the same way, the other party has to relinquish some of their interests. In negotiation, the parties also have to compromise since they give up part of their interests and needs in order to find a common ground upon which the conflict can be resolved Nadler, Thompson, & Boven, 2003()
A good example of application of negotiation in conflict resolution is in the conflict between nurses and doctors in the facility.
